In celebration of the 3rd International Microorganism Day (September 17, 2019), iBET researchers were present in the streets of Lisbon with several hands-on activities related to the theme “Microorganisms and Food“.
International Microorganism Day was launched in 2017 by the Portuguese Society for Microbiology and it’s now celebrated worldwide, with several physical events and online via the hashtag #InternationalMicroorganismDay. This initiative aims to raise awareness on the essential role that microorganisms play in our health, environment and quality of life, as well as their biotechnological potential.
The 17th of September was chosen to celebrate the day when the Dutch Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1683, sent a letter to the Royal Society of London, reporting the first description of a single-celled organism.
