Marta Abreu Paiva, a PhD scientist working at Animal Cell Technology Unit at iBET/ITQB was selected for the runner-up prize for the “Best Poster Presentation Award” in a total of 190 posters presented at the 53rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Society of Clinical Investigation (ESCI), held in Coimbra, Portugal.
The awarded poster presentation describes part of the work done at Stem Cell Bioengineering group, regarding 3D models of cardiac cell cultures and novel methods for the maturation of these cells. Combining 3D cell culture models and metabolic modulation, iBET researchers were able to achieve more mature pluripotent stem cell derived cardiomyocytes which have the potential to improve current drug screening assays based in in vitro cell models.
In addition to Marta Paiva, iBET was also represented in ESCI 2019 conference by Margarida Serra, who presented the research work about “Advances in Pluripotent Stem Cells cell processing: New technologies for novel therapies” and Maria João Sebastião, with an oral presentation entitled “Tackling the controversia: Decoding Human Cardiac Progenitor Cells Regenerative Potential in Acute Myocardial Infarction”
ESCI was established in 1967 as a pan-European Society to integrate clinicians and scientists with a genuine interest in uncovering mechanisms of disease. ESCI is therefore a forum for discussion, debate and networking in order to advance the science of clinical investigation from bench to bedside. The programme of ESCI 2019 included symposia in gene and cell therapy, neurobiology of aging, mitochondrial biology and redox signalling in health and disease as well as bioinformatics and machine learning in biomedicine.
